The Mark Gunter Photo Awards have closed and the judges are right now perusing the professional and amateur galleries, to form their long lists and ultimately their top 10’s in both categories. They’ll come together to make the ultimate decision — to award the Mark Gunter Photo of the Year 2024.

It’s Shortlist time — and the first Shortlist of the 2024 #MarkGunterPhotoAwards is from Dominique Powers @dominiquepowers. Congrats to everyone chosen by Dominique.

We are witnessing an exceptional finale at the 2024 Tour de France. Kasia has just won the race, regarded as the most prestigious in cycling, by a 4-second margin. Taylor Phinney, her husband, is heading toward her, his hands covered in paint after cheering her on a few meters below, on the slopes of Alpe d’Huez. A barrier separates them, but it doesn’t take away from the joy they share together after this victory. | Photo by Thomas Maheux @thomas_maheux from France |

During stage 15 of the Giro d’Italia, heading toward Livigno, I heard a rumour about skiers leaping over the first riders to arrive. I thought, “This could either be incredible or complete rubbish.” I decided to take my chance — and the result was absolutely amazing! Luckily, Pogačar went for the win and was the first to reach the scene, making this moment even more spectacular. | Photo by Leon van Bon @leon_van_bon from Netherlands |

My job often goes like this: Searching for faces in the throng, a subject not moving, yet not fully recovered – the liminal state between ribbons of race tape. Before requisite oxygen is drunk and composure returns, there exists a wellspring of images, dwelled on for seconds; expressions that last years Giuliana Salvini-Morgen of Trek Future Racing, after the u23 XCC at the 5th round of the UCI MTB World Series in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. | Photo by Piper Albrecht @piperalbrecht from Australia |

French fans cheer as Pauline Ferrand-Prévot makes her way toward the finish during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games mountain bike race in Élancourt, France, July 28, 2024. I noticed all the other photographers getting low and centrered for a traditional finish photo, but I knew this was the picture I wanted to make, the fans were a huge story during this race.| Photo by Nick Iwanyshyn @nickiwanyshyn from Canada |

Lachlan Morton on Day 12 of his lap around Australia: One of the toughest days of the trip left him with a thousand-yard stare as he rode into camp, barely able to walk, let alone move. He eased into an ice bath, an inflatable kids’ pool, and the emotion, or perhaps the lack thereof, etched on his face said it all. | Photo by Karter Machan @kartermachen from the United States |

Ever since seeing the route of this years crit national championships, I knew I wanted a photo from this specific bridge. When I arrived, the angles and background did not really click for me, but I decided to play a bit with the sunlight coming from over the big fortress to my left. Uno-X did win in the end, having pulled most of the race.| Photo by Jørgen Mo @moern from Norway |

The German Cyclocross Championship took place at the 14.01.2024 in Radevormwald. The intense snowfall in the men’s race. I liked the mistakenly peaceful impression that the falling snow put over the hard race. I liked the contrast between the peaceful snowflakes and the hard race. | Photo Claudia Dilay Hauf @claudia.dilay.hauf_photography from Germany |

The German Cyclocross Championship took place at the 14.01.2024 in Radevormwald. This day started with intense snowfall and transformed the race track into a snowy-mud-mix, where the tough ladies partly rode without leg warmers. I wanted to capture the freezy toughness of the female riders in motion. | Photo Claudia Dilay Hauf @claudia.dilay.hauf_photography from Germany |

Rain poured before and during the most recent World Cup at Dendermonde. There was no climbing on the bike with those conditions. Carrying the bike was by far the fastest. Marie Schreiber perfectly demonstrates this.| Photo by Amanda Crow @a_crow_photography from Netherlands |

Commuting by Barcelona I try to find out different places and take photos giving my message (bike) by my messenger (camera), so that this is a hidden and attractive place in Barcelona called ‘Sant Pau del Camp monastery’ set it in ‘El Raval’. When I took this photo I tried to express the perfect combination between the simplicity of an old bike framing by the old monastery. To me is a perfect match. | Photo by Xavi Calvo @calvox from Spain |
