In the inaugural Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards, we were lucky to have such talented judges; Graham Watson, Kristof Ramon, and Jered & Ashley Gruber.  Between them they have photographed cycling for some 60 plus years.

The judging process was gruelling. They narrowed down a shortlist for each category, from over 1,200 images.  Then collectively – although painstakingly – chose the winning images.

We are proud to showcase the winners here, their images, and their thoughts on being part of the Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards.

1st Prize Professional category: Wouter Roosenboom (the Netherlands)

Sittard, 23-09-2016 – Cannondale-Drapac Pro Cycling Team pictured during stage 5 in the Eneco Tour, a 20.9 kilometres team time trial.

“Winning the first Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Award was a great honor for me. Even more special because I met Mark when he visited the World Championships in Valkenburg. I was in shock in 2015 when I heard the bad news that Mark passed away but through this contest he will be in my mind forever.

If you participate in a photocontest you hope to win but you also know it’s all about taste.  I was really very happy when I heard that I won the contest.” Wouter Roosenboom
